Meditation in Motion

Tai Chi (or Taiji) is often described as 'meditation in motion'. Originally developed as a martial art in 13th-century China, it has evolved into a mind-body practice used today for stress reduction and a variety of other health conditions.

It consists of a series of slow, focused movements accompanied by deep breathing. The goal is to circulate the body's life energy, or Qi (pronounced 'chee'), in a balanced way throughout the body.

🎋 Scientific Insight: BDNF and Neuroplasticity

Tai Chi has been scientifically shown to increase BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor), a protein that acts like 'Miracle-Gro' for the brain, supporting neuroplasticity and memory. This makes it a powerful practice for a healthy and long-lived lifestyle.

Core Principles

🌊

Flowing Like Water

Movements are continuous and circular, like a river flowing without interruption, promoting smooth energy circulation.

🌬️

Rooted Balance

Maintain a strong connection with the ground, like a tree with deep roots, providing stability and strength.

👁️

Mindful Awareness

Focus your mind on the present moment and the sensation of movement, calming the nervous system.

🎋

Softness and Harmony

Its philosophy emphasizes using the opponent's energy against them (in martial arts form) and staying relaxed rather than tense.

Thai Chi secret is to let go. Let go of your thoughts about doing it right or wrong. Let go of being perfect, of being critical, of self doubting. Let go and that means you can just float. Like a leaf in the wind, like a boat in a gentle stream, like a being of your highest spirit, floating in a serene sea of blissful energy.

How to Begin

To begin Tai Chi practice, you don't need any special equipment. Wear comfortable clothes, stand straight with your feet shoulder-width apart and your knees slightly bent. Focus on making the movements slowly, fluidly, and with deep breathing. Focus your mind on your body's movements and your center of gravity (Dantian).
